Don't eat what you won't harvest...carrion eaters
Once we were - - -
Gray stiff bristled hair
soft from front to tail
coarse from tail to front
Squirrels occur to me
Bold in the tree tops
fast on the ground
hollow boned legs
heavy entrails
sharp square teeth for gnawing . . .
Silver and blue hairs mix to gray.
Storing pine nuts
the squirrel yells
stand away from the tree
tree tree tree tee treee
An easy shot . . .
a .22 pump rifle
puts a neat hole in his head
I take only the tail.
He looks strangely like a dead cat
with gopher teeth and
the dog tears his guts out.
- - - hunters and gatherers
are we
killing and eating as we go
cut the farmer's fence
and let the animals run free
the farmer is a gatherer, a
taker of excess,
in the civilized way
of Cub foods
cut to size and
plastic wrapped.
you could get arrested
for tearing the head of a duck
because you were drunk
stupid and hungry
But the feedlot business monsters
cram the cows into shit and straw and mud
pens with corn in trough to fatten them up
more pounds, more money
I love a wonderful steak of a slaughtered cow raised
in mud and manure, shotup with antibiotics and steroids
t o keep it big and strong
cut up in to predefined pieces,
sealed best side up in plastic.
- - - hunters and gatherers
are we
killing and eating as we go
cut the farmer's fence
and let the animals run free
Kill them yourself.
Living
has meaning if you do
your part of the killing
to eat.
